چکیده

An overview of the role of NO x in the formation of rural 03, regional transport and its potential impact on urban air quality is presented. An analysis of a specific O3 excursion in southeast Michigan (8-2-90) is performed based on a combined urban and regional-scale model. The regional component of the model represents transport and photochemistry from sources as far away as Texas. Results suggest that rural 03 and regional transport sensitive to NO x emissions and relatively insensitive to changes in volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions. This differs from the situation in urban areas, where 03 is sensitive to both NO x and VOC. Regional transport and upwind NO x emissions have a significant impact on peak 03 in Detroit. Implications for urban and regional-scale abatement strategies are discussed.

Observation-Based Assessment of the Impact of Nitrogen Oxides Emissions Reductions on Ozone Air Quality over the Eastern United States

Ozone is produced by chemical interactions involving nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight. At high concentrations, ground-level ozone has been shown to be harmful to human health and to the environment. It has been recognized that ozone is a regional-scale problem and that regionwide control strategies would be needed to improve ozone air quality in t...

Assessing the Public Health Impact of Regional - Scale Air Quality Regulations

awma.org july 2008 em 29 The Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR) will further reduce regional emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), thus reducing fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ground-level ozone pollution in the eastern United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that CAIR will provide the largest benefits of any Clean Air Act rule issued in...

Industrial emissions cause extreme urban ozone diurnal variability.

Simulations with a regional chemical transport model show that anthropogenic emissions of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (NO(x) = NO + NO(2)) lead to a dramatic diurnal variation of surface ozone (O(3)) in Houston, Texas. During the daytime, photochemical oxidation of volatile organic compounds catalyzed by NO(x) results in episodes of elevated ambient O(3) levels significantly ...

Impact of the 2008 Global Recession on air qualityover the United States: Implications for surfaceozone levels from changes in NOx emissions

Satellite and ground observations detected large variability in nitrogen oxides (NOx) during the 2008 economic recession, but the impact of the recession on air quality has not been quantified. This study combines observed NOx trends and a regional chemical transport model to quantify the impact of the recession on surface ozone (O3) levels over the continental United States. The impact is quan...

A Reactivity Based Emission Inventory for the South Pars and Its Implication for Ozone Pollution Control

The South Pars zone in Iran encompasses the largest gas refineries and petrochemical complexes in the world. In the South Pars zone, elevated concentrations of reactive hydrocarbons co-emitted with nitrogen oxides from industrial facilities lead to substantial ozone production downwind. To understand the role of these emissions on the ozone formation and, to formulate appropriate control st...
